An Amazing Creation: Apple Mac Pro reviewed

28. February 2007

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

From the sleek design to the wicked fast innards, the Mac Pro is a work of art.

Mac Cheese-Grater ProI’ll start with design. The silver casing is made unique by a cheese-grater like front and back, and intriguingly shaped handles on the top and bottom of the case. A tasteful white dot tells you whether the computer is on, asleep, or off.

The inside is organized well, and makes simple upgrades simpler, while still allowing access to the more advanced parts of the computer and direct access to the logic board.

The quad core Xeon setup is awesome for multitasking. If you want sheer speed, go for the 3.0 ghz, but if what you need is mega-multitasking, all you really need is the 2.0 ghz model.

.mac, which offers a free 60 day trial, makes it easy to sync between two computers; even if one’s a PC.

iLife that comes with all new Mac computers is far superior to any software that comes native on a PC.

The OS is fresh and not preloaded with spyware and viruses like eMachines, Dell, HP, Vaio, and others do.

Basically, it’s amazing.

Two Updates

26. February 2007

I have purchased a Mac Pro, which I will of course be reviewing, although I can tell you right now it will be a good review.

I also purchased a mouse pad from Func, which I hope will be a very good mouse pad. My Ice Mat is gone with my old computer, but Mac Mighty Mouse doesn’t go with it very well anyway. Hopefully they like this one. I’m sure they’ll like the picture on the mouse pad (custom designed by yours truly):

It seems I mistakenly overwrote the image. Sorry about that.

JBL Creature Speakers Reviewed

25. February 2007

In my life, I have experienced a few types of speakers. The first and most common is the $10-speakers. In some cases that number is as low as $5. These are what have powered my computers and iPod for the most part. The next step up is my $15 pair of headphones. You’d be surprised how much of a difference the extra $5 makes, but I can’t say it’s high quality. I’m not sure what the entertainment system downstairs ran us, but I know it was more than it should have. It’s 5 piece surround and I know it was at least $150. And then there are car stereo systems, usually a step above what I am used to except maybe the surround. Until now though, I haven’t really known the luxury of good sound.

JBL Creature SpeakersI bought some JBL Creature Speakers. They look awesome, and they’re sold at Apple stores everywhere. After reading a few good reviews and a couple bad ones that sounded irrational, I made somewhat of an impulse buy. After all, they’re in high demand, I can always eBay them, right? Well, we’ll never know.

These are hands down the best speakers I’ve had or listened to regularly. They trump even surround sound, though they’re only three-piece. But oh, is that bass amazing. It doesn’t krinkel like that of the surround downstairs. It doesn’t shake the house like the one downstairs. It gently vibrates, pulsates air out of it, releases an almost soothing sound.

And for speakers a little over three inches square, the Creature’s treble producers are nothing to scoff at. The amount of sound that comes out of these things is amazing. They can get well into the limits my ears can take without losing quality. It’s simply amazing. There is little breakup, even with low quality MP3s.

Some additional perks include a nice white LED under each piece. It’s quite a nice touch. I also enjoy the amazing design of them; they look even more amazing in person than you see in the pictures. Finally, I’m quite fond of the volume system. On your right side speaker you’ve got two metal contacts, a - and a +. No moving parts, you just touch the plus and the volume increases. Hold your finger on the button and the volume increases more dramatically, at a quicker rate. The same goes for the - of course, and you don’t ever have to press down, the button doesn’t wear out or get sticky and make an annoying noise every time you press it.

Count me up as a fan of these amazing little Creatures. The only speakers I know are superior to these ones are the Harman Kardon Soundsticks II (also sold by Apple stores), and those exceed my modest budget of some $60.

PexagonTech Storage Devices

20. February 2007

Hey guys,
I’m sure you all love the fact that my site is ad-free, and I’m determined not to let it get overwhelmed, but from the start I had some plans to put a few ads up on the site to pay for hosting and the domain at least. The first of these is an advertisement for Pexagon Technology. They make external hard drives and USB drives. I have one myself, and on the back it says “Keep Luminerd out of direct sunlight.”

I’m not just plugging these guys because of the commission, I actually like their storage device. The only thing I’ve found is that the plastic is a little cheap, and I’ve had it crack, but other than that my USB drive has been reliable and good to me. So, if you have some spare change and need either an external drive or a portable USB drive, head on over to Pexagon Tech and you can support me at the same time :)

Here’s the direct URL: http://affiliates.pexagontech.com/idevaffiliate.php?id=109

Thanks guys!

I’m Sorry…

18. February 2007

Blogs have been lacking lately. I have got to find something new to blog on. For now, all I can do is mention that with Combat Films and Research I could very possibly begin blogging on video games as they relate to war and actual combat. CFR is relaunching their blog The TOC and I’ve spend the past few days working mostly on that for them. In addition I’m working on a project for a company which wishes I not name them on this site. It’s to be the employment section of their website and will be a lot larger than most employment opportunity pages. We’re including testimonials, large descriptions of the environment, etc. I’ve pretty much finished the aesthetical side of it and am now working together with the staff to produce quality content. I can’t post a URL here, but email me if you would like to check that one out.

The computer’s gone and I’ve a lot further to go for my Mac than I’d expected. If anyone has $900 to loan me, let me know. :)

Sorry that’s all I’ve got right now. Peace, folks.

The Final Countdown

10. February 2007

I’m designing the last site I’ll ever design on this computer.

I’m playing (and beating) Star Wars Battlefront II for the last time.

I’m reading enGadget for the last time on this computer.

I’m gazing and drooling over sexy pictures of naked Mac computers for the last time on this PC.

I’m blogging for the last time on this computer.

It’s really going.  It’s going to be gone.  This is the Final Countdown.

Goodbye. It’s been fun.

6. February 2007

I say goodbye to my computer some time within the next 5 days.  I will receive $915 for it.  That is for my computer, all of my games, my monitor, my speakers, my keyboard, my mouse, and my Icemat.  Not to mention all of the packing material.

It’s a ludicrously low price.  Of course, it was ludicrous for the auction to end during the super bowl as well.  Maybe it was ludicrous not to set a reserve, but I couldn’t fathom that it wouldn’t sell for at least $1500.

Oh well.  It’s all done now.  I’m saying my goodbyes.  I’m blogging for probably the last time on Discover Seattle.  I’ll always remember her.  I have the video footage of her.  And I’ll never forget glancing over at the whirring fan, looking behind it to a large blue OCZ heatsink.  Glancing at the shiny motherboard, from which protrudes a slick graphics card and two sticks of RAM covered by a nice blue ram-fan.  Looking over it all is a prismatic power supply, black mirror sides showing distorted perspectives of the rest of it and bouncing more blue light through the case.

Goodbye.

Some stuff a rich guy said…

4. February 2007

Bill Gates Quotes
Bill GatesI have 100 billion dollars… You realize I could spend 3 million dollars a day, every day, for the next 100 years? And that’s if I don’t make another dime. Tell you what-I’ll buy your right arm for a million dollars. I give you a million bucks, and I get to sever your arm right here.

Like almost everyone who uses e-mail, I receive a ton of spam every day. Much of it offers to help me get out of debt or get rich quick. It would be funny if it weren’t so exciting.

Microsoft is not about greed. It’s about innovation and fairness. (lol…Microsoft is about fairness? I suppose that’s why Billy boy lied his way into a high position at Apple only to unfairly steal tons of highly classified secrets and exploit them for his own company…)

People everywhere love Windows. (last I checked, people who know what they’re talking about love either Mac, Linux, or some other *nix…and people who don’t know what they’re talking about either don’t give a crap or don’t know there’s anything else. I’ve met a very small amount of people who actually ‘love’ Windows, and those ones are just misguided…)

Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want?

The browser space that we are in we have about 90 percent. Sure, Firefox has come along, and the press love the idea of that. Our commitment is to keep our browser that competes with Firefox to be the best browser - best in security, best in features. (Well, ya fail miserably on both counts)

There are people who don’t like capitalism, and people who don’t like PCs. But there’s no-one who likes the PC who doesn’t like Microsoft. (Uhh…yea…you just keep telling yourself that…)

What we’re really after is simply that people acquire a legal license for Windows. (well, let me tell you, the best way to do that is to charge a mere $400 for the next version of Windows.)

When the PC was launched, people knew it was important. (Hmm. That’s not how I heard it…)

You see, antiquated ideas of kindness and generosity are simply bugs that must be programmed out of our world.

Your most unhappy customers are your greatest source of learning. (And yet, you never do.)
