My friend Archie, who unfortunately is forced to work in the PC world, was checking his rarely used MSN/Hotmail account when he noticed some unsolicited email from…guess who? Everyone’s favorite people over in Redmond, Washington. He followed the unsubscribe link, not wishing to be further brainwashed, and came across this…I’ve highlighted the “punch line”.

The Beginning of the End

Next monday comes the first day of my senior year. At first I thought I was going to blog about this, but now I realize it doesn’t really constitute a full blog entry. Alas…

FSJ writes hilarious review of how Microsoft does things

12. August 2007

I’m no huge fan of Fake Steve Jobs for the most part. It’s not that I disagree with what he has to say - he seems very intelligent - I’m just not fond of his writing voice. For one thing, ironically enough (considering the real Steve Jobs quote he has up: “Negative people upset me”), he is one of the most negative bloggers I have ever read.

But enough on that. I’m posting here because I read something of his that I not only liked and laughed at, but found to be extremely true from the ground up. He writes about how Microsoft does things — and compares it to the way U.S. congress writes bills. He’s spot on with that one. Anyway, head over to FSJ now and check it out for yourself.

Oh, and he mentioned a parody video that piqued my interest: Microsoft’s version of the iPod box. Unfortunately, no link was provided. I went ahead and did a little digging, though, and here it is for you to enjoy. It is very amusing, and it doesn’t even bother to exaggerate (much). Hit me up in the comments if you know of a better quality version somewhere out there.

Peace out

A Disturbing Sight…

11. August 2007

I know a lot of you have to use Windows, for a good variety of reasons, but this statistic I do find disturbing. It seems that a whopping 40% of you are using Internet Explorer! Now it occurs to me that perhaps I haven’t made it clear to you all that there are superior alternatives…I’ll try to be brief.

Most Used Browsers by Visitors to LuminousNerd.com

Internet Explorer IconThe Problems of Internet Explorer

  • It lets in a TON of spyware! Don’t think you are exempt to this, if you use IE your computer is already infected with literally hundreds of malicious software bits. I promise!
  • It takes up more of your computer’s RAM than it ought to (it makes your computer lots slower).
  • It loads pages slower than Firefox or Safari.
  • It is less customizable than Firefox and Safari.
  • It crashes far more than Firefox or Safari.
  • Safari IconAlternative One: Safari

  • My favorite browser is Apple’s Safari.
  • Safari for Windows is so new that nobody has had time to make any malware that gets through it. Apple is also very good about staying on top of things, so I suspect it will be the safest browser for years to come.
  • Safari loads pages extremely quickly.
  • Safari is light weight and takes up very little of your precious RAM or processor power.
  • With Safari, you can close the browser and get all of your open tabs/windows back when you reopen it by going to History -> Reopen All Windows from Last Session. Very nifty.
  • Safari is beautiful.
  • Firefox IconAlternative Two: Firefox

  • My second favorite browser is Mozilla’s Firefox.
  • Firefox is programmed very well, and very little spyware gets through in comparison to IE. Mozilla is not keeping on top of this as well as they could though, and more and more malware is able to get through Firefox.
  • Firefox loads quickly compared to IE, but slower than Safari.
  • Firefox is more full-featured than either Safari or IE, but subsequently requires more of your available RAM and processing power than Safari (but not IE, because IE is just programmed terribly).
  • Although Firefox can’t natively restore all tabs/windows from the last session, you can trick it into doing so by always closing it illegally (CTRL-ALT-DELETE, Processes tab, click Firefox and End Process). That way it will ask you if you want to restore the last session when you start it up.
  • Firefox is skinnable, so if you don’t like the look you can change it to countless others.
  • In closing let me just say that making the switch isn’t very difficult. Downloading takes a few minutes, installing takes another few minutes, and you’re good to go! Both Safari and Firefox will import all of your Favorites and preferences! It has never been simpler to make the switch!

Let’s make it a goal to see that 40% figure drop to 30% over the next few weeks! ;)

    Galcon T-Shirt Design Competition

    9. August 2007

I’m not sure how many of you guys are designers, but in case there are a few of you out there I thought I’d give a heads up on the Galcon T-Shirt Design Competition. My Galcon Design Contest entryI’ve told you about Galcon before, and I continue to enjoy this excellent game wherein you can “Conquer the Galaxy in Five Minutes”. Winners of the T-Shirt Design Competition get the T-Shirt they designed as well as 10 free licenses to Galcon (presumably for all your friends and/or colleagues). Best of all, you can enter the contest as many times as you want. Head on over to Imitation Pickles, where Galcon’s website lives, to checkout all the juicy details on the contest.

And leave a comment if you do enter, I’d love to see your entries. Here’s mine so far, though I’ll be refining it and probably making more too!

    Apple Biz is Buzzin’

    8. August 2007

    New iMac

Any regular readers here know that I’m a huge fan of Apple, and a lot has been going on lately. Yesterday there was a Mac conference, which, as usual, I watched in its entirety as soon as it was made available on Apple’s site. So what’s new? Well, like I said, a whole lot.

The biggest thing for most is the new iMacs. They got a pretty sweet processor upgrade, and lots of new expansion options. More RAM, better graphics, and -FINALLY- a Firewire 800 port. I gotta say, they look pretty sweet too. I’m a fan of the new Apple style - Aluminum + Glass + Black. At first I was a little upset — traditionally I have disliked the black Mac products such as the black MacBooks and iPods. Still, the way they are implementing it on the new products (so far iPhone and these iMacs) is far better than what we’ve seen in the past.

But I digress. Apple also released both iLive and iWork ‘08. I’m pleasantly surprised to see a spreadsheet app added to iWork - Numbers. However, from what I have seen it is still more about presentation than actually keeping data…for that, fellow Mac-users might need to resort to OpenOffice, or…heaven forbid…Microsoft Excel. I already told you how happy I was about the new iMovie - completely revamped - and now that I’ve seen the presentation I like it even more. I’ve never been a big fan of iPhoto, but the updates are welcome. Garageband doesn’t seem to have gotten too much added to it, except for Magic GarageBand, a feature which, quite frankly, seems rather childish to me. Still, surely some will find it useful.

On the less hyped side of things, the Mac Mini got a refresh, just in time for my friend Archie to make the leap! Is it time for you, too? Also, Mac Pro now has a raid card upgrade option, which is nice albeit very expensive.

Last but not least is the new keyboard. Although I love the look, I am severely frustrated at a few things. One, why did they move so many of the function keys around (eject, volume, dashboard, exposé)? They were already in decent places, and I really, really don’t see how this is an improvement in any way. I’m not alone. A lot of people are very confused as to this change. Aside from the top row of keys, which I’m sure I’ll get used to, I do like the new button style (though I haven’t actually tried it yet, it is supposed to be very similar to the MacBook, which I have tried and absolutely love). The new Apple Keyboard

Here’s the most frustrating thing though. The bluetooth version of the keyboard is condensed, like a laptop keyboard. all the keys are squished in, there’s no numpad, things like that. Jobs’ reasoning behind this was that people with wireless keyboards tend to move the keyboard around more, from their lap to their desk, and therefore would enjoy the lighter weight. I really don’t mind the option, it seems decent, but here’s what I do mind! I am not the only one in the world who likes a FULL keyboard! I like my arrow keys to have plenty of room around them for games, and for keys to be reasonably spaced out so my hands don’t get cramped using them! And I don’t like wires any more than the next person. There really, really needs to be an option for a wireless version of the full, stretched-out keyboard. I don’t see any excuse not to have one.

Enough with my griping. All-in-all, I don’t think anything revolutionary has happened here, but some decent upgrades/updates from Cupertino. Thanks, Apple!

iMovie Shot in the Face in a Bloody Display of Wisdom

    7. August 2007

Does anyone remember me complaining about iMovie? Well, okay, so my anger was projected on iDVD, but I was no happier with iMovie. Well, thankfully I don’t have to worry about it too much any more as I finally made the big leap: I got Final Cut Studio, and it’s amazing. But I digress.

According to enGadget, who is liveblogging the Apple event today, iMovie has been completely redone by a guy who found the old iMovie as difficult as I do. So he figured it would take him less time to write a whole new app, and that’s just what he did, and then he sold the app to Apple. Sounds like a great story to me! Whether it’s true or just a cutesy way to make us feel like Apple is the good guy, I don’t know. Still, the fact that this software has been rightfully rewritten is a very good thing.

More on Apple’s new stuffage later! Peace out!
